Editorial Food Photographer | Fruit Jam Advertising Images

Editorial Food Photographer

As an editorial food photographer, I love to create a story in my mind about the images I’ll create. I shot these fruit jam advertising images for my client, Sweetly Divine. The photos advertise their delicious freezer jam that can be found in grocery stores here in Northern Utah. I’ve always thought no store bought jam tastes as good as homemade jam. But I was pleasantly surprised to find out that these freezer jams taste incredible! They might be even better than homemade jam! I wanted to tell a story through these images that would evoke feelings of warmth, home, and comfort. When viewing the images, I hope you feel like you’re sitting in your grandma’s kitchen. Imagine you’re biting into a thick piece of homemade bread slathered with a dollop of homemade fruit jam…yum!

Telling a story through props and styling

I chose the props I used in the images with that story in mind. A small wooden bread board plates the hero of the shot–the slice of bread spread with jam. The wood tone added a lovely warmth to the image that I think was a perfect choice. It makes the slice of bread feel grounded and framed in a pleasing way. A linen napkin layered over the bread board adds an extra pop of color and additional softness. I switched out the napkins so that the color of the napkin would complement the colors of the different flavors of jam.

Additionally, I used a rustic butter knife that I found at an antique store to spread the jam and I chose that knife rather than a new, modern-looking knife to lend a sense of heritage and old-fashioned nostalgia to the images. I added butter and fresh fruit and berries to help the viewer recognize the flavor of the jam and imagine the familiar process of buttering a slice of homemade bread, then spreading homemade jam over the top before sinking their teeth into an ever-delectable treat.
