Utah Food Photographer | Monochromatic Food Flatlays

Utah Food Photographer

As a Utah food photographer, I constantly look for ways I can experiment with food and the principles of design. Recently while creating advertising images involving lots of fruits and vegetables, I experimented with color and shapes during the process. First, I gathered several fruits and veggies that were similar in color. Next, I matched them up with three of my colored backgrounds to shoot some monochromatic food flatlays. I loved celebrating the red, orange, and yellow hues in these fruits and vegetables. Nature creates the most vibrant, beautiful colors in the food we eat every day. That’s really amazing when you take the time to think about it!

Movement (Red)

In this photo, I created a sense of movement by repeating the number three throughout the image. Three plum slices, three strawberries, and three tomatoes move your eye from the top of the image to the bottom.

Balance (Orange)

In this image, the butternut squash and round orange slice mirror each other. Both are cut lengthwise and facing straight up. Soil clinging to the bunch of carrots across from the roughly cut sweet potato add an earthy, organic element that I enjoy in this photo. The pointy orange slice and pointy mango slices parallel each other as well. All of those dualities create balance in this image. I delight in the baby pumpkin for my own selfish reasons. I grew it from a seed in my garden, and I’m very proud of my little pumpkin crop this fall!

Emphasis (Yellow)

The pineapple cut lengthwise plays the starring role in this image! I adore all the texture seen in the pineapple’s fruit as well as the sculptural nature of the leaves. The cut open yellow bell pepper is also a favorite part of this photo for me–such a funky, asymmetrical and imperfect shape that I really enjoy looking at. The smaller fruits around the pineapple are arranged in a way that continually leads your eye around the photo and back to the pineapple, which help to emphasize the pineapple even more.
